Stop IRS Wage Garnishment — Fast
The IRS can take up to 70% of your disposable income before it hits your bank account. A wage levy can usually be released within 24–48 hours with proper representation.
What Is IRS Wage Garnishment?
An IRS wage garnishment (technically called a wage levy) is when the IRS instructs your employer to withhold a portion of your paycheck and send it directly to the IRS to satisfy your outstanding tax debt. Unlike a one-time bank levy, a wage garnishment is continuous — your employer deducts the amount from every paycheck until the debt is resolved or the levy is released.
The IRS sends a "Notice of Levy on Wages, Salary, and Other Income" (Form 668-W) to your employer. Your employer is then legally required to comply. They must withhold a significant portion of each paycheck — often leaving you with far less than you need to cover basic expenses.

How an IRS Wage Garnishment Works
Start Your CaseIRS Sends Final Notice
Before garnishing wages, the IRS is required to send a Final Notice of Intent to Levy (CP90). You have 30 days to respond before action begins.
Form 668-W Sent to Employer
If no action is taken, the IRS sends your employer Form 668-W. Your employer must respond within 3 days and begin withholding immediately.
Amount Withheld Each Pay Period
The IRS uses a table to calculate the exempt amount (what you're allowed to keep). Everything above that is sent to the IRS — often 50–70% of your paycheck.
Continuous Until Released
The garnishment continues every pay period until the full balance is paid, an alternative resolution is established, or a levy release is secured.
How to Get a Wage Garnishment Released
Several options can result in an immediate levy release. The right one depends on your situation.
Don't self-disqualify
More taxpayers qualify than the IRS's initial rejection letters suggest. A professional evaluation takes 15 minutes and costs nothing.
Enter a resolution program
Establishing an installment agreement, submitting an OIC, or qualifying for CNC status typically results in an immediate wage levy release.
Demonstrate financial hardship
If the garnishment leaves you unable to pay basic living expenses, the IRS can release it based on documented hardship — even without a full resolution agreement in place.
Request a Collection Due Process hearing
If you haven't yet had a CDP hearing, requesting one halts the levy while the hearing is pending.
Pay the balance in full
Full payment immediately releases the levy — though this rarely is an option for taxpayers in this situation.
Challenge the assessment
If the underlying tax assessment is incorrect, disputing it can result in a levy release while the dispute is resolved.
